After the completion of the federal motorway BAB A71 between Erfurt and Schweinfurt in the course of the traffic projects ‘German Union’, the BAB A71 will be extended to the north up to the BAB A38.
The principal piece of this extension is the construction of the Schmücke tunnel south of Heldrungen in the section Sömmerda East up to the motorway intersection Oberröblingen. Because of the special position within the ’fauna-flora-habitat’ (FFH) “An der Schmücke“, the concerns of ecological building are of substantial significance.
The Schmücke tunnel consists of two separate tubes with a length of approx. 1,720 metres, each with two traffic lanes and one emergency lane.

The two tubes are connected with each other through five gains. The two gains in the section of the breakdown bays will be fit for traffic.
Due to unfavourable building ground and ground water conditions, a multitude of different stabilizing measures both in the tunnel and the open cut sections will be necessary.

Both tubes will be driven at the same time form north and south respectively. In the course of the accompanying road construction with a length of approx. 7.7 kilometres including the construction of two points of access, extensive amelioration measures will be realised.
Furthermore, three bridges and several noise protection walls will be constructed in this lot.
