The national motorway A 17 between Dresden and the federal border with connection to the motorway to Prague closes a gap on the north-south-axis of the Central European main road network.

One part of the route runs through a sensitive area of the Dresden periphery and for this reason nearly 4 km were built underground. The tunnel Dölzschen is 1070 m, the tunnel Coschütz 2337 m long. The two are connected by the Weißeritztal bridge.
